Roosevelt’s Little White House:
A Quiet Southern Gem with a Big Story
Warm Springs, Georgia — where history, healing, and heartfelt inspiration converge.

If you’re mapping out a road trip through Georgia or looking to add a meaningful and reflective stop to your travel page, Roosevelt’s Little White House Historic Site in Warm Springs makes for one of the most compelling and unique historic destinations in the state.
Why Warm Springs Matters
Back in 1924, Franklin Delano Roosevelt — then a rising political figure stricken with polio — arrived in the small rural town of Warm Springs seeking relief in the area’s naturally warm, buoyant spring waters. While the springs didn’t cure his paralysis, Roosevelt felt enough physical benefit and emotional comfort to return again and again.
In time, his connection to the place went far deeper than physical therapy; it shaped part of his worldview. His experiences with the local community influenced New Deal initiatives that helped bring electricity and opportunity to rural America.

What to See and Do
🏡 Tour the Little White House
Built in 1932 while Roosevelt was Governor of New York, this modest six-room cottage served as his personal retreat and later as a presidential refuge. Today, the house is preserved almost exactly as it was the day he passed away there — offering a hauntingly beautiful, deeply human look at a towering American leader.
To my surprise, the house itself was about half the size I anticipated. It’s no larger than an average home we have today. Built entirely from repurposed materials and supplies found around the local land.
When Roosevelt came to Georgia, he saw firsthand what it was like for the rural families, and he wanted them to feel comfortable when they visited, which is why he chose not to build an extravagant mansion.

🎨 The Unfinished Portrait & Museum Exhibits
In the adjacent museum, you can view FDR’s Unfinished Portrait — paused at the very moment he suffered a fatal stroke on April 12, 1945 — along with personal items like his hand-controlled 1938 Ford convertible, his cane collection, and vintage radio broadcasts of his famed Fireside Chats.
🌊 Historic Pools & Springs
Just a short walk from the house are the historic therapeutic pools where Roosevelt and other patients once exercised and socialized. While these pools may sometimes be under renovation, there’s still a sense of stepping back into history as you feel the warm water bubbling from below.
