Exploring the Birthplace of Abraham Lincoln

I love to travel and see all that I can. I usually try to find attractions and activities that I wouldn’t find near home. Kentucky is such a beautiful state to visit in both the summer and the winter.

When planning a visit, it’s a good idea to allocate a full day to fully immerse yourself in the experience. It is split into multiple locations; his birthplace, his early childhood home, and the museum downtown. Each area offers unique insights into Lincoln’s life, making it a must-visit for anyone interested in American history.

Abraham Lincoln Birthplace Memorial

The Abraham Lincoln Memorial is a significant and moving tribute located in the National Park dedicated to the life and legacy of the 16th President of the United States. Visitors can explore various sites that celebrate Lincoln’s achievements and his impact on American history. The memorial itself features stunning architecture and beautiful surrounding landscapes, making it a perfect spot for reflection and appreciation of Lincoln’s contributions.

First, explore the memorial by taking a stroll through the visitors center and take a look at the Lincoln family bible. You’ll notice how large it is compared to the versions that are sold in stores today. You’ll also find sentiments and various artifacts from the late 1800’s. Before you leave, be sure to check out the short film in the theater.

Just a short walk from the visitor center, lies the Memorial Building, designed by John Russell Pope and completed in 1911. Once you reach the building, after walking up an endless amount of stairs, you can go inside where you will find the cabin.

The Lincoln Museum

Inside the museum, you can enjoy a walking tour that delves into Lincoln’s early life and his significance in American history. One of the highlights is the scavenger hunt of downtown Hodgenville, which adds an interactive element to your experience. The museum features a variety of exhibits that showcase artifacts, photographs, and memorabilia related to Lincoln and his time.

Visitors will find that the museum beautifully complements the nearby Lincoln Memorial and the surrounding historical sites.

Abraham Lincoln Statues

In the square of Hodgenville, just outside of The Lincoln Museum, you will find a 6ft statue of Lincoln atop a marble pedestal. You’ll also find a statue of him as a boy with his dog.

Knob Creek

Knob Creek is another significant location related to Abraham Lincoln’s life. It is known for being the area where Lincoln lived for a portion of his early childhood. The site often emphasizes Lincoln’s formative years and the experiences that shaped him into the leader he would become.

Visitors to Knob Creek can explore the historical surroundings that influenced Lincoln’s upbringing. The site often features informative displays and walking trails that allow you to connect with the landscape that was part of Lincoln’s early life. The house on the land is a replica of his boyhood home from 2-8 years old.

It’s a great addition to your itinerary if you are interested in exploring Lincoln’s background and the environment that played a crucial role in his development. Just like the Abraham Lincoln Birthplace Memorial, this location provides insights into Lincoln’s childhood and offers a unique perspective on his legacy.
