5 tips to stay safe
- Share your travel plans with a friend or relative – Where you’ll be staying, transportation information, and at least 1 contact number in case of emergencies.
- I always like to plan ahead for everything. Of course, I leave time in between for the miscellaneous things in case I want to sightsee, or do a little shopping. Some events might require tickets in advance, in which case you don’t want to wait until the last minute.
- Invest in a GPS tracking device that you can share with a friend or relative.
- Research the area
- Always be aware of your surroundings. Growing up, my mom would tell me this so much that it eventually became annoying. As I’ve gotten older, I appreciate the importance of that phrase, as it has saved me more than once. Always trust your gut.
- Google Maps is a great resource to check the surroundings of any area. Satellite images may not always be the most up to date, but you never want to go into an unfamiliar area alone.
- Transportation
- NEVER leave a drink unattended, or out of sight. Always keep it within reach, and directly in front of you. It’s easy to get distracted, especially when traveling alone.
- I personally do not drink so I don’t enjoy going out to bars. When I travel, I’d much rather order take out and eat in my car while I watch the sunset over the mountains. That sounds so much more enjoyable; at least I know I’m safe.
- Have a plan B – Think ahead, and plan for the worst. That is one thing being a parent has taught me. You can never be too prepared. It’s always good to have an emergency plan.

Resources for solo travelers
- Eat right
- Bring snacks if you can. I prefer to drive in most situations for this reason. I like to bring my own food rather than having to stop constantly. I always stay conscious of what food/snacks I purchase when I travel because I tend to always spend the most money on food.
- If you’re flying avoid airport food – it is overpriced, so eat before you go and bring a snack if you can.
- Start early – nothing good happens after dark
- Seriously, unless you’re doing something in a safe area, I wouldn’t suggest planning any events after dark if you’re traveling solo.
- Inform the hotel you are traveling alone so you do not get a connecting room and make sure it locks properly.
- Depending on where you’re staying, this might not be a problem; however, if you are staying in a hotel then I would confirm this before checking in. I suggest investing in a portable security door lock.

- Travel insurance
- There are a variety of companies who offer travel insurance. Depending on the type of trip, where you’re traveling, and how long you’re visiting, you might not need insurance. I would highly recommend some type of travel insurance if you plan on flying.
- I use SafetyWing because up to 2 children ages 10 and under are free. It also includes both medical and travel insurance in one plan.
