Updated June 2025

I recently re-visited the park and I want to give a huge applause to the park crew. There was an incident that happened while out touring, and it put everyone in the park at risk as we were stuck at a standstill for about an hour. The employees swiftly handled the situation and maneuvered the vehicle from the ditch to get traffic flowing again.

Checklist – Before You Go

  • Stay hydrated – Make sure to bring plenty of water, or drink of your choice. You will be in the park for at least an hour.
  • Change of clothes – Better safe than sorry. Unless you want to pay $30 for one of their shirts, it’s best to bring your own.
  • Towel – Again, they provide towels if you want to purchase one.

If you choose to drive your own vehicle, please note that there are a few areas that are not in the best of driving conditions, especially with animals walking around. Please be cautious and take your time when driving through the park.

Drive-Through Animal Safari

I enjoyed this adventure more than my kids did, no doubt. I drove my own vehicle, but if you have a nice car I would not recommend doing this. The animals will approach your car and many of them have antlers or horns that can, and will scratch your car.

You can rent a van that seats up to 6 people (must be 25 or older with current drivers insurance) if you’d prefer to not drive your own car. If you have a large group of 20 or more you can get a tour bus. You can travel at your own pace, so take as much time as you need. The road is wide enough to pull off for a photo shoot or go around if there’s a stubborn animal that won’t get out of the way.

You’ll want to check the weather before you go. If it’s too hot, the animals will more than likely be in the shade, and not walking around. Also, there will not be any encounters in the walkabout zoo if it’s too hot outside. While the park is open in the rain, the animals might also want to take cover, so keep this in mind when planning your trip. The only time the park closes is in the event of severe weather.
Read more about the animal encounters here.

Walkabout Zoo

This was a nice adventure for the kids. The entrance is through the gift shop, and a short walk takes you to a secluded area with indoor exhibits featuring some reptiles and a few other animals outdoors like exotic birds, monkeys, and you might even get to see a peacock walking around. Then make your way over to the Pavilion where there’s a Giraffe Feeding Yard. Lastly, for the little ones, they even have a playground.

Pricing

Tickets are sold per person; General admission starts at $29 for an adult when purchased online here. They also offer package deals if you’d like to include a meal or souvenir bottle. Children 2 and under are free, and Seniors get a $5 discount.

I recommend purchasing the food in advance with your tickets, because the bags are a lot more expensive once you get to the park. The bags of food go fast, especially if you have young kids. Half of it will probably get dropped on the floor, or thrown out the window. Go ahead and grab, and extra bag of food. You can thank me later.

There will be a hoard of animals at the entrance gate, so be weary of giving away all your food at once. You don’t want to miss an opportunity with an animal later on. Another reason why you might want to grab that extra bag of food. 2 per person will be enough.

Cleanliness

We went on a summer weekend, and they were fairly busy. Parking was limited on-site. The bathrooms were well-kept, and there were a few vending machines outside. The indoor building featured a cafe for a quick bite, with snacks and drinks. They also had a cute gift shop where you can get toys, stuffed animals, and apparel.
